Garden Sauna or Indoor Sauna: Which Is Worth More?

A cabin inside the house seems more convenient: no going outside, no lighting up. In practice two things decide it, and hardly anyone thinks of them at the planning stage: moisture, and how much of your most expensive floor space you are giving up.

Garden Sauna or Indoor Sauna: Which Is Worth More?

Moisture: the main argument for the garden

A sauna puts a great deal of steam into a building. Every time you pour water on the stones, that moisture has to go somewhere, and it goes into the fabric of the house.

The solution is a truly powerful mechanical ventilation system with its own extract duct. Without it, the consequences show within a few months: damp walls in neighbouring rooms and, in the worse case, mould.

A garden sauna does not have this problem at all. The moisture simply goes outside when you air it.

Square metres you give up for good

An indoor cabin takes up several square metres of living space, the most expensive square metres you own. Measured against property values, that floor area costs many times the price of the sauna.

In the garden the sauna takes up space that was free anyway and takes nothing away from the house.

Total cost

An indoor cabin is sometimes cheaper to buy, and that is where the misunderstanding comes from. But you then have to add preparing the room, waterproofing, mechanical ventilation and a heavy-duty electrical supply.

A barrel sauna in the garden needs no alterations to the house. It needs a level base and, with an electric stove, a power supply. That is all.

The experience that matters

From 90 °C straight out into the frost is exactly why people put the sauna outdoors. Contrast, fresh air, snow underfoot.

From a basement cabin you step out into the basement. Physiologically it works, but it is a completely different experience and after a few months it is no longer an event.

How often you will really use it

The argument “you don’t have to go outside” cuts both ways. The cabin in the house is closer but it is not an occasion, and it is easy to forget.

The garden sauna makes you go out, and that is precisely why it becomes a ritual you arrange with the family. Many garden sauna owners use it more often than they would have used an indoor cabin, even though intuition says the opposite.

When indoors makes sense

If you have no garden of your own.

If you live in a flat, a small cabin is the only realistic option, ideally an infrared cabin, which does not produce steam.

If, for health reasons, going out into the cold after the sauna is out of the question.
